Hiking on the moors
discover the Breton moorlands
A typically landscape
The Breton moorlands are typical of the countryside in the region and can be found from La Pointe du Raz to Les Monts d’Arrée. Whether they are manmade inland or created by the sea winds along the Breton coast, they are part of a fragile environment in conservation areas where local flora and fauna abound.
In the centre of Brittany, in Le Kreiz Breizh, there are many vast moorlands, created as a result of man cutting the vegetation over centuries. They are specifically maintained to conserve them and have become islands of exceptional natural beauty thanks to their rich biodiversity.
The moorlands are managed either by not-for-profit organisations or by the local authority, Les Landes du Liscuis, Les Landes de Locarn and Les Landes de Lan Bern – nowadays a nature reserve. A visit is a must for all nature lovers.
Dense natural environnement
Scottish heather and bell heather, heath and gorse – the emblem of Brittany - the Breton moors are home to a variety of species of flora, some of which are rare. The biodiversity is such that it needs no human intervention, it manages itself.
The moors are home to many species of bird such as Montague’s harrier or the Dartford warbler, which is found in Les Landes de Locarn. There are also many reptiles to be found on the moors, many species of spiders and thousands of insects.
